Teaching
Courses at the University of Liège, and supervision of doctoral and master's research.
Courses
- Modeling dynamical biological systemsAn introduction to ecological modelling accessible with limited mathematical and computational skills. Students learn to write the mass-balance equations that govern dynamical systems, translate ecological and chemical processes into mathematical formalism, solve them in simplified conditions and analyse the solutions — with practical work on simple model codes and examples from terrestrial, freshwater, ocean and gene-regulation systems.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Mathematical analysis and modelling methods applied to the environmentMathematical concepts and tools applied to the analysis and modelling of the physical, biological and chemical aspects of the environment, with a focus on theoretical and mathematical ecology: mathematical analysis and mass-balance equations, dimensional analysis, and dynamical modelling from Malthusian and logistic growth to prey–predator and competition models, steady states and stability.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Marine EcologyAn introduction to marine ecology — the interactions between marine organisms and their environment at the scale of populations, communities and ecosystems — combined with an introduction to marine ecosystem modelling and a field trip studying the distribution of marine organisms in relation to biotic and abiotic factors.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Introduction to marine ecosystems modellingFrom “what is a model, and why do we need one?” to a working simulation: model formulation, ecological interactions and chemical reactions, spatial components, parameterisation, model solution, testing and validation, and a taxonomy of ecological models.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Dynamics of marine ecosystemsThe interactions between marine physical and biogeochemical processes, from small to large space and time scales: geohydrodynamic context and variability, stratification, rotation, boundary layers, coastal upwelling and tidal mixing.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Ecological and biogeochemical cycles modelingPractical modelling exercises building on the master's introduction to modelling — including a simple model of the Posidonia meadow in Corsica — together with the modelling of the marine carbonate system, pH and early diagenetic processes in sea-floor sediments.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Statistical analysis of oceanographic dataA hands-on discovery of computational and statistical tools for the analysis of biological data sets in R: from vectors, matrices and p-values to PCA, clustering and integrated analyses applied to oceanographic data.ULiège catalogue ↗
- Mathematical analysis and modelling methods applied to the environment / Introduction to marine ecosystems modellingA combined unit: mathematical analysis and modelling methods for the environment — functions, dimensional analysis, and the dynamical modelling of biochemical transformations, prey–predator and competition systems — together with an introduction to marine ecosystem modelling from formulation to testing and validation, with practical exercises in R.ULiège catalogue ↗
